-On a recent transatlantic flight from Florida to London Heathrow, married flight attendants Hunter Smith-Lihas and John Lihas locked eyes across the aisle.+You hear it before you see it. Hundreds of all-terrain vehicles tearing across the desert, the roar of their engines echoing over the sand dunes. The noise goes all night long, making it impossible to grab any shuteye.

-The two men smiled at each other, before swiftly returning to serving champagne to first class travelers.+Not that anyone does.

-This shared smile was fleetingbut spoke volumes. And laterwhen Hunter and John were on break at the same time, the couple found themselves sitting in the onboard crew lounge, reflecting on the shared life and careers theyve built together.+“There is no sleep in Liwa,” says Ginger Krooka 23-year-old motorsport enthusiast from the Netherlands. “Its crazy.

-“I met you for five minutes on the airplane when I wasn’t even supposed toand now we’re living in the city togetherand you’re sitting across from me on the plane and we’re working together,” Hunter recalls saying to John.+Each year, the Liwa International Festival draws crowds of car fanatics deep into the Empty Quarterthe vast desert stretching from the United Arab Emirates into Saudi Arabia.

-“You never think when you meet someone for the first time like thatthat it’d go this far. So it’s kind of surrealAnd it honestly just makes you so happy, because you’re like, how did I get here?”+Three hours’ drive from Abu Dhabi, the landscape is almost empty for most of the yearsave for a new ribbon of blacktop and towering dunes.

-Airplane meeting +In December, it becomes dreamscape for motorheads.

-How Hunter and John got here was via a series of unexpected moments and decisions starting six years ago, in 2017.+

-Back then, Hunter was just known as Hunter Smith. He was in his early 20s and working as a gate agent for Spirit AirlinesHe’d aspired to work in aviation since he’d starting watching a flight attendant who chronicled her job on YouTube.+“They come together and they drive,” says Krook, who plans to return for her fourth festival this December“Everything you can think of related to off-road driving, you can find there.

-“I thought, Oh, my gosh, this is the best job everI definitely want to do something like this,’” Hunter tells CNN Travel today.+Full throttle or nothing’

+Local Emiratis first recognized the motorsport potential of the Liwa Oasis more than two decades agoThey began gathering with their off-road vehicles at Moreeb Dunethe tallest in the region at more than 300 meters (about 1,000 feet). The challenge was simple: reach the top.

-After he graduated college, Hunter secured a gate staff position in his home city of Pittsburgh, PennsylvaniaThe role was the perfect foot in the aviation door.+An official festival was created in 2004 and has grown steadilyIn 2024, it drew more than 600,000 visitors, according to the event’s organizers. Alongside motorsports, a cultural program has taken shape, complete with fireworks each night.

-Working the airport gate, Hunter interacted with hundreds, if not thousands, of people each day. As a sociable person, he always enjoyed the conversations — however brief — with travelers and airline staff.+But the central attraction — racing up the Moreeb Dune — remains the same.

-But Spirit Airlines’ employment pool was so big he rarely met the same flight attendants twice.+“Everyone watches each other as they go up,” says Krook“They are waiting for things to happen.”

-One morning, one of Hunter’s gate attendant coworkers asked if he could pass on some papers to the captain of a soon-to-depart Spirit flight, which was heading to Orlando, Florida.+Related article

-This kind of task, says Hunterwas typically not my job, I did not normally do that.”+Spectators cheer drivers on, but the dune is daunting. In Arabic, Moreeb means “terrifying.”
 +
+“If your tires are not big enough, your suspension is not good enough, you’re not able to come up,” she says. “You cannot be scared because it’s full throttle or nothing.”
 +
+Smaller, less terrifying dunes serve as obstacles in “dune-bashing” races, where cars and trucks dart and drift across the desert, leaving exhaust and plumes of sand in their wake.

+It was “this kind of Mad Max-feeling city,” says Christian LeBlanc32, a Canadian influencer who attended last year. There were these huge lights illuminating the dunesand as we got closer you could see there were these (cars) driving up and down and up and down. We kept getting closer and closer, and (then) could hear the chaos.”
